The Metal Maker is a level 1 structure available to both CORE and ARM that produces +1.0 unit of metal while it is switched on, but at the expense of -60 energy. Metal Makers are neither a resource nor space efficient means of generating metal, as the space they take up must also factor in the space taken up by the energy generators necessary to power them, which could have instead been put towards bolstering the energy economy elsewhere; they are also incredibly unfavourable in the early game where there are still metal deposits available to cap and energy income is not particularly high, or on Core Prime maps where a Metal Extractor can be built anywhere to produce more metal for a fraction of the energy cost.
Even at the point in the game where Adv. construction units can construct the Fusion Reactors needed to sustain large quantities of Metal Makers, the same units are also capable of building Moho Metal Makers, which are slightly more energy efficient and substantially more space efficient compared to a regular Metal Maker; Metal Makers are thus relegated to instances where energy generation is abundant but there is a shortfall in metal generation and/or it's not possible to build a Moho Metal Maker, the former scenario typically only being a concern on maps where metal deposits are limited, and the latter scenario only occurring in the original campaign missions or online sessions where the Moho Metal Maker is disabled.
